INTERESTING FACTS

In Law No. 4541 of March 17, 1970, Upala was established as canton number thirteen of the province of Alajuela; as head, the population of the same name was designated.

As for the origin of the name of the canton, there are several theories, among them the one that establishes that the word Upala is an indigenous voice of Nahuatl: ulli, rubber; atl, water; bread, over; so Upala means on or in the river of rubber.

Upala is head district of the canton with an area of 254.62 km2, represents 16% of the Canton. Aguas Claras with an extension of 407.64 km2 represents 26% percent of the canton • San José with 285.50 km2 represents 18% of the canton. Bijagua with 178.69 km2 represents 11% of the canton.

It was under the government of Mr. José Joaquín Trejos, that, through a resolution of the Legislative Assembly that approved Law No. 4541 on March 17, 1970, the canton of Upala was officially created, and the title of Villa was granted, but at that time, the districts and their respective limits had not been established.

Bullfights, ribbon races, and even fights in the middle of dance are characteristics of the joyful and rural hustle and bustle of the community’s civic festivals celebrated in April.
